Books: as well as the aforementioned Fleishman, I’ve really enjoyed Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children series - themes of complexity, emergence, communication and empathy. Have you read any of those?

OK definitely going on the list then! I love a post-apocalyptic drama...so for me it's probably the draw here!
Fleishman Is In Trouble would have been considerably more watchable with more Claire Danes or Lizzy Caplan and (much) less Jesse Eisenberg!
